ACC Commissioners set to vote on human relations commission

The creation of a citizen-led human relations commission in Clarke County will have a final vote early next month. After ACC Commissioners passed a sweeping non-discrimination ordinance earlier this year, Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz tasked the commission’s Legislative Review Committee with creating a human relations commission to help ACC residents navigate the process of filing complaints under the new law, and to provide advice on issues of equity and inclusion to lawmakers.

The committee finished their work and produced a draft ordinance to create the body, but asked commissioners to hold off on a vote until November in order to get more public input on the plan.

Commissioners were supportive of the idea at their Tuesday night agenda-setting meeting, and signaled their readiness to give the proposal a final votebat the commission’s November 2 meeting.
