Athens News Matters: Deborah Gonzalez

WHEN DEBORAH GONZALEZ WAS ELECTED DISTRICT ATTORNEY LAST YEAR, SHE WAS A TRAILBLAZER IN MANY WAYS: THE FIRST HISPANIC DISTRICT ATTORNEY IN GEORGIA, THE FIRST FEMALE DA IN THE WESTERN JUDICIAL CIRCUIT, AND THE FIRST PUERTO RICAN WOMAN TO BE ELECTED AS DA IN THE COUNTRY.

HER FIRST MONTHS IN OFFICE HAVEN’T BEEN WITHOUT CONTROVERSY. NOT LONG AFTER HER ELECTION, SOME IN OCONEE COUNTY WANTED TO SEPARATE THEIR COUNTY FROM THE WESTERN JUDICIAL CIRCUIT, WHICH GONZALEZ SERVES.

EARLIER THIS MONTH, GEORGIA ATTORNEY GENERAL CHRIS CARR SINGLED OUT GONZALEZ IN A HOUSE COMMITTEE HEARING, CRITICIZING HER FOR DECLINING TO PRSECUTE SOME LOW-LEVEL OFFENSES.

Listen to her conversation with WUGA's Alexia Ridley.

Alexia Ridley joined WUGA as Television and Radio News Anchor and Reporter in 2013. When WUGA TV concluded operations, she became the primary Reporter for WUGA Radio. Alexia came to Athens from Macon where she served as the News Director and show host for WGXA TV. She's a career journalist and Savannah native hailing from the University of Michigan. However, Alexia considers herself an honorary UGA DAWG!
