Books for Keeps Seeks Volunteers for Book Distribution

The annual book distribution time is here for Books for Keeps.

The organization plans to give away 95,000 books this year. Distribution kicks off in Elbert County Tuesday. Executive Director Leslie Hale is Executive Director of Books for Keeps. She says the nonprofit will hand out books in Athens later this month, but volunteers are needed.

“We need volunteers to do all of it, we will start right here in Athens on April 23rd and we will go for four solid weeks after that,” Hale said. “Four solid weeks. We need hundreds of volunteers to make this happen and it is, I promise you, the best spent three hours that you will find anywhere.”

Hale says the organization needs around 700 volunteers, from a variety of different backgrounds.

“We need volunteers who reflect the makeup of the schools we serve. So even if you don’t have children, we need folks who are in the schools showing that they care about kids and that they care about education and just interacting with the children in a positive way.”

Books for Keeps also serves schools in Warren County and Atlanta.

“Books for Keeps is a three-person nonprofit, there are just three staff members, that’s why volunteers are critical to this effort. So there are lots of opportunities to get involved with us and it really is just so much fun.”
