Hospitals in Athens and the surrounding areas continue to have high numbers of COVID-19 patients. In Region E, Athens’ region, there are 293 COVID patients, roughly 41% of all hospital patients in the region.

The Georgia Department of Public Health reported 110 new COVID cases for Athens-Clarke County today.

96% of inpatient beds and 99% of ICU beds are full. The percentage of ventilators in use has increased to 76%. Emergency department beds are 64% full.

As of this morning, Piedmont Athens Regional, one of the hospitals in region E, is in normal status, meaning the hospital is open to accept incoming ambulance traffic, but the emergency department is severely overcrowded.

St. Mary’s Hospital, also in Region E, is in total diversion status, meaning the hospital cannot accept EMS patients at this time, and the emergency department is busy, according to the Georgia Coordinating Center.
