FC-CIS Launching Steps to Connect Challenge Fundraiser

Family Connection-Communities in Schools of Athens is launching its Steps to Connect Challenge fundraiser. The effort raises money and awareness for the organization.

Liz DeMarco is a Board Member and Resource Development Chair at FC-CIS.

She explains how it works.

“We are challenging the Athens community to either walk, run or ride, we have three mileage goals and you get to select what your goal is going to be,” DeMarco said. “But them we also, to make it fun are breaking people into three teams, so it’ll be a little competition.”

De Marco says with the pandemic shutting down traditional methods of raising money for the nonprofit, creativity was key in getting much-needed financial support to continue the organization’s work of bettering the community and the lives of children.

“We have CIS Site Coordinators, they were in our high schools, but now we’ve moved them to the elementary schools. We have Strategic Action Teams. One of our programs that is funded by Athens-Clarke County is the Neighborhood Leaders and they have been incredibly important during this COVID pandemic, serving people who need help in the community.”

FC-CIS works more than 100 partners to create solutions, which have led to an 80% reduction in teen pregnancy in Athens, boosting graduation rates and doubling the number of Quality Rate childcare centers.

Programs include Neighborhood Leaders, Site Coordinators, Bridge to Employment and more.

The challenge runs through September and participants can join in any time. Visit theFC-CIS Facebook page to join.
