Local Hospitals Continue to Battle the Rise of COVID-19 Patients

Hospitalizations in Athens and the surrounding counties continue with 42% of all patients in Region E classified as COVID-19 patients.

Emergency department beds in Region E are 52% full. As of this morning, local hospital, St. Mary’s emergency department is normal, while Piedmont Athens Regional’s emergency department is overcrowded, according to the Georgia Coordinating Center.

ICUs at both hospitals are in diversion status, meaning the respective departments are unable to accept incoming ambulance traffic. Piedmont Athens is also in medical diversion. These statuses sometimes fluctuate throughout the day.

Region E’s ICU beds are 96% full and are using 64% of ventilators.

The Georgia Department of Public Health reported 75 new COVID-19 cases for Athens-Clarke County today, 61 for neighboring Jackson County, and 21 for Oconee County.
