UGA: BLSA Hosts March for Racial Equality

UGA’s Black Law Student Association is hosting a march to fight racial disparities this evening. Ashleigh Rasheed-Britt is one of the event’s organizers. She says the “March to Combat Racial Inequality” is aimed at raising awareness around several issues affecting minority populations.

Rasheed- Britt is the Vice President of the Davenport-Benham Chapter. She says one of their most pressing concerns is COVID-19 management.

“Those who aren’t totally online but still have to come to campus quite frequently, if someone is COVID positive, we may not get notification of that until days later.”

As a law student organization, members also have a more specific concern.

“Also fair process in the Georgia Law Review, so that's the journal here at The University of Georgia School of Law, historically, black and brown people the percentage in representation, have been nonexistent.”

Other issues they’d like to see addressed over time: scholarships for descendants of slaves and Linnentown, the renaming campus buildings and shifting resources from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department to community resources.

“I know our goals are UGA specific, Athens specific, and statewide specific, so some of them are short-term, mid-term, long-term goals, but overall we want change at all different levels.”

The march gets underway at 6 pm. It starts at the Arch and will end at the steps of Athens City Hall. Masks are required.
