African Perspectives for February 27,2022

Enjoy the program.

This final episode in February rounds up our month-long commemoration of Black History month (BHM), the celebration of the achievements and survival of Africans in America.
The episode focuses on the list of a few African American firsts at UGA on the occasion of the commemoration of sixty-one years of desegregation of the University of Georgia, including highlighting the website dedicated to the anniversary, www.desegregation.uga.edu.
The episode highlights some of the milestones in the journey to desegregation at UGA including the first graduates, the first faculty and the first five black players, Richard Appleby, Horace King, Chuck Kinnebrew, Clarence Pope and Larry West who broke the color barrier on the UGA football team in 1971. Now dubbed, “The Five,’ these pioneers were honored during the UGA Championship season on campus and on their 50 year reunion at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
As always, the episode featured selected enjoyable music from Africa and/or by Africans including selected tunes from the collections, Africa: Colors of the World and Panthers: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.
