African Perspectives for March 13, 2022

The second episode in March continues the commemoration of Women’s History month (WHM), the celebration and focus on the history, contributions of women to the society at large. It is a music special on the life and music of two renowned African international music stars and legends, Oumou Sangare of Mali and Angelique Kidjo of Benin. The episode opens with encouraging data from the CDC COVID Data Tracker Weekly review for the end of February. In echoing the #BreakTheBias theme for the 2022 International Women’s Day, the episode invites listeners to be responsible for their thoughts and actions in breaking the gender bias against women all around us. This episode opens with two African news updates relating to the emergent racial discrimination challenges in the evacuation of African students from the war in Ukraine and the March 3 statement by the US government to extend sanctions on Zimbabwe for another calendar year. The episode introduces each of the two featured artistes and their music. It rounds up with information about this week’s events from the WHM Calendar of events prepared by the UGA IWS. As always, the episode featured selected enjoyable music from Africa and/or by African women including selected tunes from Oumou Sangare and Angelique Kidjo, the two feature artistes for the day.
