African Perspectives for March 27, 2022

This final episode in March, the Women’s History month (WHM) concludes the month-long commemoration with a focus on the work of the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR (www.unhcr.org). This focus is against the background of so many violent spots in the World today and sadly, many of the refugees from these violence situations are women and children. The episode provides the history and contents of the work done by the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Africa and elsewhere through its over 17,800 workers in over 130 countries around the World.. The episode also shares from the statement issued by Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The episode rounds up with the announcement that Professor Juanita Bailey-Johnson, the Director of the UGA Institute for Women’ Studies was stepping down from the position, ffective July 2022. As always, the episode featured selected enjoyable music from Africa and/or by African women including selected tunes from the album, Africa by Mama Africa, Mariam Makeba and the wonderful collection, Women of Africa.
