Athens News Matters for July 26, 2023

The Classic Center Arena is facing new challenges – a key participant in the project has backed out, officials are asking for a third round of bond financing, and some commissioners are worried. Commissioner Mike Hamby joins us for a deep dive into the project.

Starting July 1, some 220,000 stores in the US will be required to post signs warning of the dangers of cigarette smoking. Cigarette sellers have until September 30 to post the signs. Dennis Henigan of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids joins us to talk about the new rule, and what effect it could have on curbing smoking.

This year, Georgia’s bald eagle populations seem to be in great shape. The recent survey reveals the species’ resilience in the face of avian influenza and how key environmental legislation has paved the way for a steady rise in population over the past five decades.

He started at WUGA in 2012 as a part-time classical music host and still hosts WUGA's longest-running local program 'Night Music' which is heard on WUGA and GPB Classical. He lives in Normaltown with his wife, Shaye and dog, Murphy.
Alexia Ridley joined WUGA as Television and Radio News Anchor and Reporter in 2013. When WUGA TV concluded operations, she became the primary Reporter for WUGA Radio. Alexia came to Athens from Macon where she served as the News Director and show host for WGXA TV. She's a career journalist and Savannah native hailing from the University of Michigan. However, Alexia considers herself an honorary UGA DAWG!
