Athens News Matters for June 1, 2024

Revise and resubmit: District 6 Commissioner Jesse Houle on their proposed county budget

It’s budget season in Athens-Clarke County, when local lawmakers spend weeks hammering out the details of a county budget that, this year, is expected to top $300 million dollars, including over $193 million in general fund spending.

As is often the case, some commissioners have produced a counterproposal to the suggested budget from Mayor Kelly Girtz. That’s the case this year with a budget co-authored by Commissioners Jesse Houle, Dexter Fisher, and Mike Hamby. WUGA’s Alexia Ridley sat down with one of the authors, District 6 Commissioner Jesse Houle, to discuss details.

Love.Craft Athens is on a mission to empower adults with disabilities

This spring semester, WUGA worked with students at the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications. This partnership, called News Ambassadors, focused on producing examples of solutions journalism, pieces that highlight responses to social problems, not just the problems

themselves. Isabelle Atkins is a News Ambassador who brings us a story about the shortage of services for adult Athenians living with disabilities, and an organization helping to bridge this gap.

Athens bookstore battles bans by stocking shelves

Efforts to remove books from the shelves of libraries and schools are advancing around the country, and the state of Georgia is no exception. Chloe Beaver is a member of the News Ambassadors program, and she explores how one Athens bookstore is responding to what critics call book censorship.

Alexia Ridley joined WUGA as Television and Radio News Anchor and Reporter in 2013. When WUGA TV concluded operations, she became the primary Reporter for WUGA Radio. Alexia came to Athens from Macon where she served as the News Director and show host for WGXA TV. She's a career journalist and Savannah native hailing from the University of Michigan. However, Alexia considers herself an honorary UGA DAWG!
