Athens News Matters: January 17th, 2026

Today on Athens News Matters, nurses with substance use disorders are asking for more protections. Plus, a local death doula explains her role.

Encore Segment of the Georgia Health Report: Nurses with substance use disorders

Advocates in Georgia say that nurses who report receiving treatment for a substance use disorder put their licenses—and their livelihoods—in jeopardy. In a December episode of the Georgia Health Report, Healthbeat Atlanta’s Rebecca Grapevine sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss alternatives to the current system, an issue which may come up in this year’s legislative session. Here’s their conversation.

Encore Segment: Destigmatizing death with Jessica Dukes

Death can be difficult to discuss—but that’s just what local end-of-life doula, Jessica Dukes, wants people to do more often. She organizes a monthly destigmatizing discussion at Athentic Brewery with the nationwide movement Death Over Drafts. Last October, Dukes sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer, who was curious about what exactly death doulas do.

Encore Segment: Death Over Drafts: The local Athenians discussing death and dying

To find out what exactly people talk about at Death Over Drafts, WUGA’s Emma Auer stopped by the event. Here’s her audio postcard, originally broadcast last October.

You just heard the voices of Brian Riccardi, Iris Hector, and Jeremy Davis, who attended September's Death Over Drafts event hosted by local end-of-life doula, Jess Dukes. More information can be found at organizingdeath.com. Their voices were set over the sounds of Athens' Good Dirt Old String Band, directed by Rob Sutherland.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
