Sharon Miller discusses her platform for Athens-Clarke County Mayor

Sharon Miller is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and a pastor in Athens. She’s also one of five candidates to enter the race for mayor of Athens-Clarke County. She sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss what sets her apart from her opponents.  

Professional ensemble Sphinx Virtuosi visits CCSD orchestra classes

The month of February is Black History Month, dedicated to defining and celebrating the achievements of African Americans in the US. This Black History Month, a string ensemble made up of musicians of color called Sphinx Virtuosi visited Athens. As WUGA’s Emma Auer heard, perhaps the ensemble’s most excited audience members in Athens were the city’s youth.

Athens native Horace King made history as one of UGA’s first Black football players

The first Black football players to join the University of Georgia team in 1971 recently screened a new documentary about their historic experiences. Horace King is a member of the Original Five, and his story is featured in “The First Five: Legacy in Motion.” He sat down with WUGA’s Timothy Goldsmith to discuss his memories of UGA, as well as his childhood in Athens.  

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
