Adam Shirley runs for District 7 seat on Clarke County School District's Board of Education

Local election season is underway, including several nonpartisan roles. The Clarke County School District’s Board of Education seat in District 7 is one contested role. Adam Shirley is the former secretary of the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections, as well as a public-school teacher running for the seat.

Shirley sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss his campaign.

Clarke County School District offers fine arts opportunities to students

From elementary school to high school, students in the Clarke County School District have access to not only subjects like math and reading, but fine arts, as well. Dr. Dan Smith is the Fine Arts, Health, and PE curriculum coordinator at the Clarke County School District. He sat down with WUGA’s Timothy Goldsmith to discuss opportunities in the arts for CCSD students, what he calls teaching the whole student.

Firefly Farmstop to host ribbon cutting in Winterville

The Marigold Collective in Winterville, Georgia has offered a farmers’ market and educational opportunities for East Athens students since 2020. On April 11th at 11 a.m., it will host a ribbon cutting for its first grocery store located next to the Firefly Trail. The Firefly Farmstop has been years in the making. WUGA’s Emma Auer sat down with Sarah Hovater, the executive director of the Marigold Collective, to discuss this milestone.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
