Athens News Matters: November 6, 2026

This week on Athens News Matters, UGA Theatre tackles an ambitious production of Guys and Dolls. Plus, a Jackson County shoe drive aims to help 400 students this holiday season.

Jackson County students get new shoes from charity initiative

Teenagers grow out of shoes almost as fast as parents can buy them. For struggling families, that can present a serious financial burden. The Beautiful Soles initiative in Jackson County is trying to solve that problem by providing middle and high school students with new shoes, free of cost. WUGA’s Alexia Ridley sat down with Aaryn Fisher, Executive Director of Jackson County Family Connection, to discuss the initiative. Beautiful Soles is run by Jackson County Family Connection, in partnership with Shoes That Fit.

UGA Theatre Department brings Guys and Dolls to life with a cartoonish twist

The University of Georgia Department of Theatre and Film Studies is bringing a bright, fantastical interpretation of the classic 1950s musical Guys and Dolls to the Fine Arts Theatre as part of UGA’s Spotlight on the Arts initiative. WUGA’s Havivah Saltz went to discover what makes this production special.

You can see Guys and Dolls at the UGA Fine Arts Theatre on November 7th, 12th, and 13th at 7:30pm, or on November 8th and 15th at 2pm. Tickets can be bought at the door or online.

Marigold Fiber Fest highlights the material we wear every day

The first annual Marigold Fiber Fest is coming to Winterville next weekend. It aims to promote the use of natural fibers, and will include workshops, local vendors, demonstrations, and an art show. The Marigold Fiber Fest Secretary, Gareth Crosby, sat down with WUGA’s Havivah Saltz to talk about the festival.

The event will be held at the Winterville Cultural Center on November 14th from 10am to 5pm, with some workshops starting at 9am. To learn more and sign up for workshops, go to marigold-fiber-fest.square.site.

Havivah Saltz has been with WUGA since 2023 as an on-air host and the producer for African Perspectives. She got her start in radio on WOBC FM at Oberlin College (class of ‘23), and she’s also worked as an on-air host on Athens' Power 100.1 and Magic 102.1. She is currently WUGA's Senior Content Producer. Outside of work, you can find Havivah making art, writing fiction, practicing Japanese, petting her very round cat, and watching concerning amounts of TV.
Alexia Ridley joined WUGA as Television and Radio News Anchor and Reporter in 2013. When WUGA TV concluded operations, she became the primary Reporter for WUGA Radio. Alexia came to Athens from Macon where she served as the News Director and show host for WGXA TV. She's a career journalist and Savannah native hailing from the University of Michigan. However, Alexia considers herself an honorary UGA DAWG!
