Inclusive Recovery Athens will hold a recovery symposium on June 10 to support transgender community members.
The event comes at a time amidst anti-trans legislation, such as Georgia’s recent bill banning minors from receiving gender-affirming surgery. Danielle Bonanno, the Executive Director of Inclusive Recovery Athens, helped organize the event.
“Being forced to go through a puberty that didn’t align with my identity caused me a lot of harm, and I feel like it’s an overreach, it’s an overstep, and I feel like we need to stand up and I think allowing our trans kids to go through puberty that doesn’t align with their gender, is a risk we can’t take.”
The event will take place at Epting Events and include a Drag Show Lunch hour hosted by Karmella Macchiato with performances by Nik@Nite, Yutoya Leon and the Legendary Sophia Lo’Rent.
The organization will also provide resources for Athens’ transgender community through STI testing referrals and speakers that will discuss surgery recovery.
