Common Heritage Scanning Day

Athens-Clarke Library

The Athens-Clarke County Library’s Heritage Room is partnering with First A.M.E. Church located at 521 North Hull Street, to host a family document scanning day at the church on Saturday, July 29th as part of a project funded by a Common Heritage Grant from the National Endowment for Humanities.

This scanning day is the second of four to take place over the next couple months as a means of helping protect and preserve history relating to the African American experience in Athens-Clarke County. The facility's Public Information Officer Rhiannon Eades says those participating are asked to bring in a wide variety of items People are invited to bring family photos, photo slides, recipes, letters, family Bibles and other memorabilia to be digitally scanned

“Family mementos, things like scrapbooks, recipe cards, family Bibles, old letters, photographs, things like that,” Eades said. “We’ll show you how to preserve them and we’ll also scan them and give you a flash drive with a digital file on it so that you’ll always have those precious memories.”

People who participate will receive digital copies of the materials.

If allowed by owners, the digitized material will be made available to the public through a partnership with the Digital Library of Georgia and the Digital Public Library of America. You can register for an appointment by visiting the library's calendar of events at www.athenslibrary.org. It runs from 10 am until 6 pm. Other dates and locations include August 26 at Oconee County Library and September 9 at East Athens Community Center.
