UGA Fan Shares Memories of 1980 Championship Game

As Bulldog fans prepare for tonight’s national Champion Game between the University of Georgia and the University of Alabama, some fans are taking a look back to the 1980 National Championship season. Brice Nelson recently retired from UGA after 31 years in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Science.

He attended that game when he was a high school senior. He remembers a few key plays from the game as well as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“Of course Herschel diving over the offensive line, and interceptions and blocked field goals,” Nelson said. “Probably the thing I remember most, is running onto the field afterwards and being down there on the field-level with the fans. It wasn’t like I was caught up in the chaos or anything, you felt very safe and it was an enjoyable time. It wasn’t like today when they keep you off the fields and security is arresting people.”

Nelson also attended this year's SEC Championship game between the Dawgs and the Auburn Tigers. Unfortunately, he’ll be watching tonight’s game from home and not the stands.

UGA students, faculty and staff who can’t make it to the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta can watch the game at a Watch Party in Stegman Coliseum. Those attending must have their valid UGACards to enter. The SEC clear bag policy will be enforced. Doors open at 6:30 pm and kickoff is at 8 pm.
