Athens Library Hosting Free ESL Culinary Classes

Athens Regional Library

The Athens-Clarke County Library will offer free ESL Culinary classes starting next week.

The six-week series of classes will combine nutrition and cooking instruction with English language education for non-native speakers.

“They learn some cooking skills and they also have an opportunity to practice their English.”

That’s according to Rhiannon Eades, the Public Information Officer for the library.

The classes will be led by a team of instructors which will include an English as a Second Language instructor and a chef. Eades says they’re made possible thanks to a grant.

”The library got a grant from the American Library Association and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. The grant is called the American Dream Literacy Initiative Grant. The grant enabled us to purchase some equipment and supplies so that we could set up a class; it’s a series actually.”

Classes begin Monday February 4th. Eades says this is the second wave of classes offered in the community, the library held classes last fall.

“New this time around is that we’re actually offering it twice a week. On Mondays we’ll have it from 10:30 til noon for the morning people. We’re also offering the class on Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8. Maybe you can’t come during the day because your work schedule doesn’t let you do it, so so can sign up to take the Wednesday evening class instead.”

Call the library at (706) 613-3650 to sign up or to learn more.
