Clarke School District Holding Budget/Tax Increase Meetings

The Clarke County Board of Education is holding the first of three hearings on the proposed FY 2020 budget Tuesday evening. The $164,699,956 measure keeps the same millage rate of 20 mils. Due to an increase in property taxes, the overall collection amount is still expected to increase.

There is an expected increase of 7.40 percent for property taxes levied in 2019, and while the millage rate for the school district is to remain at the tentative 20 mills, this estimate would in effect increase overall collection by 1.378 mills.

The proposed tax increase for a home with fair market value of $200,000 is approximately $96.46, and the proposed tax increase for non-homestead property with fair market value of $250,000 is approximately $137.80.

Tuesday's meeting is from 5:30 to 6 pm at Alps Road Elementary.  It will be immediately followed by a tax increase meeting from 6 to 7 pm.

Two additional meetings are planned, one Thursday, May 30th at Gaines Road Elementary School and the final meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 4th at the H.T Edwards building on Dearing Extension. Both meetings begin at 5:30 and will be followed by the tax hearing meetings at 6 pm.

The Board is scheduled to give final approval to the proposed budget and millage rate at a board meeting June 13 at 6 p.m. at the CCSD Administrative Offices, located at HT Edwards, 400-1 Dearing Extension.
