ACCPD Urges Pedestrians Use Caution in Wake of Deadly Accidents

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is urging pedestrians to be cautious in the wake of several pedestrian accidents. Two people have died and another is in the hospital in serious condition.

According to a media release from the department, in the first incident on September 7th 52-year old Willie Sims was struck and killed while he was walking westbound on the southern side of Lexington Road. Mr. Sims was walking in the roadway when he was struck by a pickup and killed.

Another incident happened on September 9th on Newton Bridge Road when 34-year old Filmon Ghebremehari was having trouble making a delivery to Terrapin Brewery.

According to witnesses, he got our off his truck and crossed the road to take a look at the scene, when he attempted to cross back, he was struck and killed.

Also on Monday, 26-year old Mary Whitman was hit on College Station Road while she was improperly crossing the road, not in a crosswalk. She was seriously injured.

Police urge pedestrians to use crosswalks, walk on sidewalks when available, walk facing traffic if there is no sidewalk and make eye contact with drivers at intersections and crosswalks to make sure they see you.
