The University of Georgia has joined a multi-institution alliance to advance diversity in its STEM programs.
Aspire: The National Alliance for Inclusive and Diverse STEM and its Institutional Change Network, which has a network of 35 institutions.
“To remain a top public research university, it is critical that we continue to lead efforts to ensure diverse representation of faculty and students in STEM research and education, both at UGA and across the nation," said UGA's president Jere W. Morehead.
UGA Foundation Distinguished Professor of Chemistry Greg Robinson is leading the project, which will include conducting a self-assessment of current practices and then developing and implementing plans specific the STEM programs.
“Promoting and sustaining diversity at the faculty level in our colleges and universities remains a nationwide challenge," Robinson said. This is why he is excited to participate.
UGA has also led the Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation for more than a decade, which offers a high school research and mentoring program. It has contributed to the increase in enrollment of minorities in STEM fields, according to a UGA press release. Since 2009, the minority undergraduate enrollment rose from 24% to 34%.
