Clarke County School Board Holding Called Meeting Tuesday Evening

Clarke County School District

The Clarke County School Board is moving forward to appoint an interim superintendent. The called meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening at 6 o’ clock at the H.T. Edwards building.

According to a release from the Athens Area Black History Committee, the NAACP and others are expected to protest the move since they say board members are ignoring calls to retain current superintendent Demond Means.

On December 9, after nearly three hours in executive session, the board voted to place Dr. Means on administrative leave. Members also voted to appoint Dr. Xernona Thomas as acting chief executive until a new interim superintendent is selected.

The action to appoint the interim superintendent is the third item on the agenda. Board members are also expected to take action to appoint a Special Counsel for Negotiations during that meeting.
