UGA Institute of Gerontology/Alzheimer’s Association Offering Free Support Group

The University of Georgia Institute of Gerontology is partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association to provide support for those living with early-stage dementia and their caregivers. Dr. Lisa Renzi Hammond is a faculty member at the Institute. She says this expands on a program they began last year.

“Working in small groups and working with a facilitator to really start to find good solutions to some of the problems that they’re having, to get support from others.”.

Renzi Hammond says the group really focuses on the living aspect of having Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementia.

“We understand that Alzheimer’s Disease is a terminal illness,” but that being said, we’re taking years and years of time in which to get out there, to the extent that one feels comfortable, and really finds ways to still engage, to still be present and to still live.”

The support group will offer practical advice to help people live with the disease.

“I would say the most complex problem that we deal with, the most frequently is, what do we do about driving,” according to Renzi Hammond. “I think in America in particular we view our cars as our independence. When should we drive, when should we not. How to we tell friends and family, if you’re in a place where you want to do that. Coming up with care plans.”
