EADC Emergency Food Distribution Thursday

The East Athens Development Corporation is holding an emergency food distribution tomorrow from 10 am until noon. The distribution is taking place outside the Miriam Moore Community Service Center located at 410 McKinley Drive. Fred Smith is Executive Director of the organization.

“We serve generally, East Athens, but it’s for anyone in Athens,” Smith said. “We don’t turn people away.”

Smith says the number has increased from serving about 100 families a month to 300 during the pandemic. The food is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Smith says the organization provides other services as well.

“We have an emergency relief fund, that we are using that we buy groceries and pay for some prescriptions and that type of thing, on an ongoing basis.”

Volunteers are needed.

“We do rely heavily on volunteers to help us take the food to the cars and prepare the food boxes, etcetera. We do ask that people who are planning to volunteer check with us ahead of time so that we can make sure that they are aware of the health and safety protocols that we have in place.”

He says there will be no person-to-person contact and those attending must come in a vehicle so food boxes can be placed in trunks.

The distribution is the result of a partnership with the Northeast Georgia Food Bank. For more info or to volunteer, visit www.eadcinc.org, or call 706-247-6777.
