Athens Unemployment Sees a Decrease in Numbers

In a Press Release put out this morning, the Georgia Department of Labor announced employment numbers for the month of September.

The Athens metro area saw an increase of total jobs during the month of September, this according to Labor Commissioner Mark Butler.

Over the same period, the total number of employed people rose to 89,257. Although this still means 6,731 fewer employed people than the same time last year.

The number of total unemployment claims is down by 14 percent since last month, but is still over 800 percent higher than the same time last year, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic

The overall unemployment rate for Athens reach 5 percent last month, almost double last September's 2.9 percent
