Several community organizations are hosting a conversation on racism and anti-racism with the authors of Stamped and Stamped for Kids tonight.
The virtual event is part of the One Book Athens: One Book Many Stories conversation series—a series that, organizers say, offers everyone in the community the chance to read and discuss the same book and think of ways to address important social issues.
“Reading the book is important,” said Valerie Bell, Executive Director of the Athens Clarke-County Library System. “The next thing is to actually have a conversation about the book and to talk about next steps and where we're going to go with the information that we've learned.” UGA’s Dr. Valerie Boyd is moderating the conversation with Stamped authors Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, Jason Reynolds, and Dr. Sonja Cherry-Paul.
“We really dreamt of having maybe one of the authors do a virtual event with us on July 12,” said Janet Geddis of Avid Bookshop. “It was beyond our wildest dreams that we'd get two of them, let alone two authors as well as the educational consultants for Stamped, Dr. Sonia Chery-Paul, who also is the person who adapted stamped into a book for younger readers.”
The event is virtual, free, and starts at 7:00. To learn more about One Book Athens and to register for tonight’s event, visit athenslibrary.org/one-book. WUGA is a media partner with One Book Athens.
