Athens Area Humane Society Moving into New Shelter

The Athens Area Humane Society is expanding. The new shelter will officially open September 1st.

Jed Kaylor is Program Director at the facility. He says the new space is designed to be a community destination.

“All of the things that are designed in the new shelter will not only add capacity for housing more homeless pets, but also increase our capacity to do spay and neuter surgeries for our local animal controls and other rescues, but also the public,” according to Kaylor.

The move into the new building on Mitchell Bridge Road in Athens comes after more than 15 years spent in a converted day care center on Mars Hill Road. The new 15,000 square foot building will allow for new partnerships as well as more much-needed space.

“We have a lot of new partnerships with UGA specifically, for shelter medicine interns. “Hopefully training the future veterinarians that help us with this problem as well. So we’re really excited about the community destination aspect, the learning aspect, and the amount of capacity that we can build for the community there.”

Funding for the new shelter comes from a combination of sources.

“We had a really generous gift from someone that passed in previous years, so that’s how we were able to basically fund the first phase. And then the second phase will be community funded and that’ll include all of the exterior agility courses and parks and things like that.”

The ribbon-cutting for the shelter is scheduled for Tuesday, September 7th from 5 to 6 pm.
