East Athens Family Bike/Ped Day on Firefly Trail

Families and children from Athens and the surrounding community are invited to the inaugural East Athens Family Bike/Ped Day on the Firefly Trail this Saturday.

“We’ve had some indications that some of the long-term neighborhood residents are a little bit skeptical about the Firefly Trail, whether it’s really intended for their own use or whether outsider groups are promoting it and getting in place,” That’s according to John Kissane, Trail Development Coordinator with Firefly Trail Incorporated. “So we really sensitive to eliminating that idea. The trail is certainly for East Athens.”

Kissane says the event will help make attendees comfortable with using the trail.

“It’s aimed at familiarizing a variety or people, primarily, children and families, to the Firefly Trail and also the North Oconee Greenway.”

A variety of different activities is planned.

“Giving kids, especially, a chance to have their bikes tuned up if they need some repairs, also getting some instruction on bike safety and bike handling and some fun activities on bikes,” Kissane said. “We’ll have some loaner bikes there for kids who do not have bicycles. There’ll be a lot of information available for parents.”

The free event is 9 am until noon Saturday at Dudley Park. It will eand with drinks and refreshments for those attending. In case of rain, organizers plan to hold as many events as possible. Participants are asked to follow CDC recommendations for COVID-19 safety. For more information, visit www.fireflytrail.com.  Once completed, the Firefly will run 39 miles from Athens to Union Point Georgia.
