UGA Women's Basketball team advances to next round of NCAA tourney

The University of Georgia women's basketball team is headed to the second round of the NCAA tournament following a 70-54 win over No. 11 seed Dayton on Friday.

The No. 6 seed Lady Dogs' performance was bolstered by all-SEC center Jenna Staiti, who scored 19 points in 25 minutes of play. Freshman forward Jillian Hollingshead had a breakout game, putting 15 points on the scoreboard, while star guard Que Morrison shot over 50 percent from the field, scoring 16 points and sinking the only three-pointer of the game for the Lady Dogs.

The Georgia bench was also productive, scoring 29 of the team's 70 points.

Friday's game marks Georgia’s 35th appearance in the 40 year history of the NCAA Women's Tournament. Along with Stanford, Georgia shares the title for the second-most appearances in tourney history, behind Tennessee.

UGA faces off against no. 3 seed Iowa State on Sunday. Tipoff is at 8:00 pm.
