A sweeping school safety bill cleared a Senate committee Thursday, keeping it in play just ahead of the deadline for final passage this year.

The Georgia House has already approved House Bill 268 with broad bipartisan support. Under the current version, schools would be required to maintain student records related to behavior that raises red flags—such as frequent absenteeism, disciplinary infractions, or police encounters.

The bill would also require school districts to operate a 24/7 anonymous tip line, staffed by trained personnel to respond to reports about students who may be planning a violent act.

The measure is now eligible for a vote by the full Senate before the legislative session ends next week.
