The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission will meet Tuesday night to consider next steps for the controversial replacement of the downtown Saye Building.

At a meeting in early April, the Athens-Clarke County Planning Commission voted unanimously against replacing the Saye Building with a parking lot. Their reasoning—paving over the Saye’s footprint would run counter to long term downtown planning strategy.

Tuesday night, the Mayor and Commission will receive the Planning Commission’s recommendation and will decide whether the church can put in a parking lot.

The body will also consider reestablishing the Land Bank Authority, which is responsible for purchasing and redeveloping properties for affordable housing. The Land Bank Authority in Athens has been dormant for the past 5 years.
