At Thursday’s work session meeting, the Board of Education (BOE) discussed the details of the proposed Student Resource Officer (SRO) Agreement between the Clarke County School District (CCSD) and the Athens-Clarke County Police Department (ACCPD).

CCSD wants to create an SRO Program in which ACC police officers will be assigned to specific middle and high schools for the next school year.

District eight board member Nicole Hull specifically had concerns about the language used in parts of the agreement. She wanted it changed before voting on the SRO agreement, like on page two, section C when it says the SRO will be involved in official police interrogations, interviews, or arrests when requested from local law enforcement or state agencies.

Hull pressed the board, “... what is the ‘when requested’ language? Why do we have to wait for that to be requested instead of making that the standard? Unless there’s something that says there doesn’t have to be an SRO able to advise on policy, to act as a liaison between a law enforcement agency and our school students, I want to see how we strengthen it to make it a requirement and not a, ‘as requested.’”

The board agreed to move the proposed agreement to the consent agenda for next month’s meeting, on May 8.
