Georgia Public Service Commission will hold a crucial primary on June 17

Nicole Jordan

The Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) is an organization responsible for regulating the state’s utility services. The commission creates policies on utilities such as telecommunications, electricity, and natural gas services. The PSC will now be holding a special election to fill two of the committee’s five seats.

The primary for the Georgia PSC’s upcoming major election will take place on June 17. If necessary, there will be a primary runoff on July 15.

Tomorrow’s primary was delayed several years by a lawsuit in which the plantiffs argued that the Commission’s statewide elections put Black voters at a disadvantage. Ultimately, the Supreme Court decided not to hear the case, and the election process has not changed.

District 2, which covers eastern cities such as Athens and Savannah, and District 3, which covers much of the Atlanta metropolitan area including counties such as Fulton and Dekalb, are both up for election. Even though the committee is elected statewide, the candidates must live in the district they are running in.

Given the PSC’s responsibilities, this election has the potential to greatly impact all Georgians who rely on these essential utilities.

In the Athens area, polls for the primary will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 17. Voters can check their registration status, view sample ballots, and receive more information regarding this election on the Georgia Secretary of State’s My Voter Page.

The general election for these positions will take place on November 4, and if needed, there will be a general runoff on December 2.
