Georgia Power customers pay an average of $175 a month and the people of Athens spend approximately 4% more than the average American on their electric bill. Voters won’t get many more chances to change that.
The republican incumbent Tim Echols, won the District 2 primary election for the Georgia Public Service Commission and he will face the Democrat Alicia Johnson in November.
In the election for district 3 which includes Clarke county, Oconee county, Barrow county among others, there will be a statewide runoff July 15th since neither democratic candidate earned more than half the votes and only 2% of eligible voters cast a ballot Tuesday June 17th.
At this time the five member commission consists of all Republicans and they are the governing body that regulates utilities in the state, approving the recent spikes in utilities and negotiating the freeze on utility rates with Georgia Power.
The timing may feel odd since the 2022 election was postponed due to a lawsuit that claimed the state’s district lines were discriminatory against black voters. Of the five, two seats are up for election.
