This Election Day, there is only one race on the ballot in Athens-Clarke County – the election of Georgia’s Public Service Commission.

The Public Service Commission is a government body that that regulates and oversees the companies that provide utilities in Georgia. There are five members of the commission who are selected by a statewide election.

Incumbents Tim Echols and Fitz Johnson, both Republicans, are being challenged by Democrats Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard, respectively.

While very few voters participated in the primary election back in June, the turnout for the general election has been much stronger.

Athenian Kim Dean lives off Epps Bridge Parkway. She says her utility bills brought her to the polls, “The Public Service Commission apparently has a hand in what our electrical, water and gas bill are, so I wanted to see about that.”

Plus, she says, “We all need to get in the habit… of voting.”

Polls will be open tonight until 7pm. Voters can find their polling location by visiting Georgia’s My Voter page.
