Firefly Trail Inc., the nonprofit that facilitates the construction of the planned 39-mile multi-use path, has opened a photo contest for trail users. John Kissane is the trail development coordinator. He says the aim is to get people outside celebrating the beauty of the trail.
“It’s very photogenic, I think, the trail,” says Kissane. “There’s some beautiful rural areas I think, and the towns it passes through now. There’s a lot of potential for some really creative photographs.”
Photos can be submitted to two categories, says board member Betsey Collins:
“The two categories are people having fun on the Firefly Trail, and the second category is scenes on the Firefly Trail.”
The Firefly Trail, which runs through Clarke, Oglethorpe, and other counties, has been at the center of controversy in recent weeks. Plans to connect a portion of the trail in Athens to the city of Winterville have stalled as the local government considers how to obtain the property needed to build the trail. Kissane says the board of Firefly Trail Inc is not taking a position which route the trail should take.
“We’re all anxious to see the trail completed as soon as it can be here in Athens-Clarke County, so we would not want to see it delayed, but there are other considerations besides the timeline that have to be evaluated,” he says.
Contest rules can be found at fireflytrail.com. Winners will receive prizes, and the photos will be displayed at the Winterville Cultural Center starting in February.
