The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission recently discussed a redevelopment project on Jefferson Road.

At the Mayor and Commission agenda setting meeting Tuesday, elected officials reviewed a proposed redevelopment project for Homewood Village Shopping Center on Jefferson Road.

The project has been in-progress since June 2024. It has been led by Carter, an Atlanta-based real estate development company. Jack Murphy, the Chief Investment Officer at Carter, spoke about the benefits of the project.

“Replacement of outdated retail with high quality apartments, improved walkability, safety, and connectivity; increased tree canopy from 12% to 47%...”

A third-party report, presented by Carter, says that traffic will not increase as a result of the project. The Mayor and Commission will vote on the proposal in their next meeting in December.
