The University of Georgia’s study abroad programs rank among the top in the nation, according to a new study.

UGA ranks No. 1 for short-term study abroad participation and fifth overall, according to the 2025 Open Doors Report. The university sent over 3,000 students abroad this past academic year.

Gary Baker, the director of UGA en España, isn’t surprised by this data. UGA has consistently ranked among the top schools for study abroad participation recently.

“There have been a lot of efforts made over the last 15-20 years to try to provide some kind of study away experience to all of our students," Baker said.

Studying abroad touts benefits like enhancing language learning and creating cultural awareness, though Baker says the impact is most obvious when talking to students.

“When you see someone saying over and over again, this was the best summer of my life, or this was a life changing experience, without wanting to take that too far and sound too grandiose, you know that you are participating in something that is, as I said before, I think enriching students' lives and their perspective on the world," Baker said.

Next year, UGA will increase its faculty-led study abroad programs from 115 to 154.
