Redevelopment deal to be discussed in upcoming Mayor & Commission session

Nicole Jordan

The Mayor & Commission will hold a Work Session on Tuesday to discuss a controversial development deal.

Last month, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor & Commission discussed a major development deal with the Athens Downtown Development Authority and CS Acquisitions Vehicle, LLC.

Proposed changes include improving the sewer system, creating a public parking deck, and constructing a mixed-used private development in the Graduate Hotel site and adjacent areas.

Controversy arose over potential impacts on Lay Park, including the temporary loss of parking and the destruction of the existing playground.

Instead of a final vote, the Commission approved a Commission-Defined Option deferring approval and requesting public review.

The Mayor & Commission will hold a Work Session discussing the development this Tuesday.
