Protesters organized across the nation today in opposition to how the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, is carrying out the Trump administration’s policies. Here in Athens, hundreds gathered to join in the movement.
A crowd of hundreds shouted these chants against ICE at a protest at the Tate Plaza on the University of Georgia Campus today.
The Party for Socialism and Liberation and other local groups organized the protest to bring attention to issues surrounding ICE and to inspire action. They encouraged people to call their local representatives and to support the Athens immigrant community.
Speakers at the protest highlighted the recent killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good by ICE agents, “Innocent people are being killed!”
Attendees like Olivia Yu and Connor Hurt shared many of the same views as the speakers.
“I’m here mostly for justice for Alex Pretti but also just in general to see what like UGA does in terms of… coming together for a greater cause,”said Olivia.
Connor commented, “People need to know about this. People need to understand that what's happening is against the values we hold in this country.”
Some Athens students at Clarke Central and Cedar Shoals High Schools also joined the movement by organizing walk outs.
Another protest was planned for tomorrow, though organizers postponed it to February 8 due to weather complications.
