The Athens-Clarke County Commission decided to hold off on a vote for the plan that will guide how the city grows over the next several decades.
The Future Land Use Map is a document meant to guide where growth and development will occur as tens of thousands of new residents move to the county in the next two decades.
Dexter Fisher is the Commissioner for District 5. He said he needs to compare the Future Land Use Map updates with the city’s service delivery plan, which will also be updated in the coming weeks.
“We got to figure out sewer and water and we got to look at trying to build where those houses are going to go and apartments are going to go. We need to make sure we have adequate sewer and water in those places,” he said.
Several Athens residents stepped forward during the meeting to oppose some of the proposed plans for higher density areas, while others emphasized the need for an affordable housing strategy. The Commission decided unanimously to table the vote on the Future Land Use Map until April.
