Piedmont Athens Regional is celebrating Black History Month with an annual health symposium and lunch Saturday.
The Howard Stroud Community Health Symposium and Lunch is a free event that aims to improve health education in the Athens-Clarke County African American community.
Attendees will hear presentations on a myriad of topics including aging, dementia, breast cancer in women and men, coping with grief and vitiligo. They will also learn Hands-Only CPR, Stop the Bleed techniques and other lifesaving skills.
The symposium’s namesake is Howard Stroud, prominent Athens educator and the first Black man to chair the Piedmont Athens Regional Board of Directors.
The symposium will be held from 9:45 am to 2 pm Saturday at the Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Services Building A at 242 King Ave. Both attendance and parking are free, though space is limited.
