An Athens bicyclist passed away Monday after being struck by a car on Olympic Drive over the weekend.
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is investigating the crash that happened westbound on Olympic Drive Saturday evening. A 37-year-old was hit from the rear by the driver of a 2013 BMW sedan while riding his electric bike.
He was treated by National EMS and transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries Feb. 23.
The driver, a 45-year-old Athens male, has been charged with DUI, Homicide by Vehicle, Following Too Closely, and Serious Injury by Vehicle.
This is the county’s second fatal crash of 2026.
