Historic Morton Theatre hosts inaugural Athens African American Film Festival

Morton Theatre Corporation

Athens movie goers are invited to celebrate Black storytelling through film, music, and conversation.

The Morton Theatre Corporation presents the Athens African American Film Festival this Friday and Saturday at the Morton Theater in downtown Athens.

“We wanted to start something really to celebrate not only Black film, but Black Athens,” according to Festival organizer Kimberly Davis."

Davis says the festival has been in the works for a while.

“So, the African American Film Festival is in its inaugural year. It’s something we’ve been talking about since before the pandemic. And it really is a space for the Morton, the historic Morton Theatre, to celebrate Black storytelling.”

The festival includes a showcase of music videos and performances by Athens area hip hop artists and a screening of Daughters of the Dust, a film about the Gullah Geechee community on Georgia and South Carolina’s Sea Islands.

“Black storytelling, Black film, Black music, Black art, Black culture, all of it matters and all of it is important,” Davis said. “Black people are really the standard-bearers when it comes to culture in America, and we want people to come away with that idea and celebrate that idea.”

Both events include a panel discussion.
