The ongoing wildfires in the southern half of Georgia have resulted in poorer air quality as far north as Gainesville.

The air quality in Athens-Clarke County is currently rated as being poor as well. The smoke pollution from the more than 90 fires that have afflicted the lower region of the state continues to spread northward.

Currently, the fires in South Georgia are not completely contained. Officials are saying that the ongoing drought is acting as fuel for the fires, and conditions could worsen in the coming days.

Governor Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency for 91 counties.

Alexzundra Tillman is a part-time reporter and producer. She is currently pursuing her masters degree in Film and Television studies at UGA and hopes to work at the cross section of these two fields in the future.
