The Athens-Clarke County Fire Department is urging residents to take note of declining air quality conditions resulting from wildfire smoke drifting into the area from the southern part of the state. Those conditions could pose increased health risks, especially for people with respiratory conditions including asthma and COPD. Children and older adults also face higher risk.
The department’s Emergency Management Agency continues to monitor the path of the smoke plume and is keeping in contact with Georgia Emergency Management officials.
The Fire Department is encouraging higher risk groups to take extra precautions and observe local air quality conditions. Residents are encouraged to monitor trusted local and state resources.
List of recommended safety measures:

Avoid strenuous activity and limit prolonged exposure outdoors.
Use air conditioning if available; set systems to recirculate indoor air when possible and utilize air purifiers.
Keep windows and doors closed to reduce indoor smoke exposure.
