Crowds continued to turn out for the final day of early voting on Friday. State election officials say the numbers are higher than previous cycles. As of Friday afternoon, the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office reported more than 900,000 Georgians had cast their ballots, or 12% of the state’s active voters.
In Athens, nearly 12,000 residents voted early. That’s 16% of the county’s 72,164 active voters. In addition to deciding the city’s next mayor, residents are also voting in five commission districts, three Board Education races, and considering a proposed Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or TSPLOST.
