The Athens area has seen record employment gains in April.
According to the Georgia Department of Labor, Athens has an all-time high number of employed residents. It has increased by almost 600 in April and over 3,500 in the past year.
The Athens Metropolitan Statistical Area has an unemployment rate of 2.4%. This is down five-tenths of a percentage point through April. This area includes four counties: Clarke, Madison, Oconee and Oglethorpe.
All 12 of Georgia’s Regional Commissions saw lower unemployment rates in April. Across Northeast Georgia, the unemployment rate decreased to 2.6%. The labor force decreased by over 500 in April, but it has increased almost 6,000 in the past year.
Initial unemployment claims in Northeast Georgia have decreased by 180 this year.
